My husband and I love the idea of bringing the beauty of the outdoors indoor and we make a pretty great team! He makes frames and repurposes vintage frames for me to create my living art on. I attempt to create the feeling of the outdoors by putting lots of love and thought into each unique piece. I use 100% maintenance free preserved moss, locally foraged driftwood, lichen and live air ferns. Each frame comes ready to hang or stand upright on a table and in some cases both. All of my creations are intended to be INDOOR decor; heat, direct sunlight and any sort of weather may damage the art.
The frames and moss need zero care (do not water the moss or frame). The moss will stay the same and retain its color without you doing a thing, just hang it indoors in indirect sunlight so the sun does not bleach the moss. The live air fern is the only thing that needs some attention from time to time. I suggest removing the air fern from it's nest about every two weeks, submerging it in water overnight, shake the excess water off in the morning, letting it dry thoroughly on a paper towel and then placing it back in it's nest. Even if you forget to take care of your air fern, that's ok, it happens. You can always go purchase another air fern, they are inexpensive, and place it in the nest like nothing even happened, because as mentioned above, the rest of the frame will stay exactly the same with zero care. Maybe you want to spice it up a little and change the look of your frame? You can also purchase a different variety of air fern, place it in the frames nest and it will give your living art a whole new look!
The preserved moss also repels dust so you don't have to worry about how to keep it clean. If you display your living art in a high traffic area, some dust may be inevitable. I suggest removing the dust using a compressed air duster (canned air), as the art is fragile and this is the most gentile way to do so.
I love thrifting! One of my favorite things is finding an awesome and unique vintage frame and breathing new life into it. My level of excitement when this happens is ridiculous. I also like to think of it as another small way of helping our beautiful planet by reusing already existing materials and objects.
I hope you enjoy my art as much as I do creating it.
